Band
Crossing
Reciprocity

A formal read of the Atlas as a banded resolution structure: each order closes at a resolution, crosses into the next order's carrying, and stays grounded where carry and trace meet at the crossing.

01

Band

A register where held strain settles to a terminal resolution. Each order closes at its own: Resolution, Coupling, Nesting, Recursion.

02

Crossing

The edge where a resolution becomes a carrying — the closed condition of one band handed forward as what the next band carries.

03

Reciprocity

Grounding: forward carry and backward trace closing on each other at the crossing. Carry alone is projected; trace alone is a name.

Return, not ascent

Order is a return, not a ladder.

The highest band crosses into practice and back to ground. The structure retraces itself, and that retrace is what keeps it grounded.

Reality Mechanics Theory is the formal read of the Atlas as a banded resolution structure.

Order is built by closing and crossing. Within a band, held strain settles into a terminal resolution. At the band's edge, that resolution becomes the carrying that opens the next band. The same crossing read forward is carrying; read back it is trace; and a placement stays grounded where the two meet at the crossing. The highest band crosses into practice and returns to ground, so the whole structure retraces itself rather than ascending without end.

This is version 0.2. It is a working formal read, stated at human scale. It reads the carrying; it does not claim that relation is made of bands, graphs, or symbols. The bands are how the Atlas already places order; the formal layer only states that placement precisely enough to be instantiated, tested, and refuted.

The proposed core is:

Band · Crossing · Reciprocity

A band closes at a resolution. The crossing carries that resolution into the next band. Reciprocity is the grounding condition: forward carry and backward trace close on each other at the crossing.

Status

Working formal read, version 0.2.

The immediate aim is to state the banded structure precisely enough that it can be instantiated across several domains, distinguished by where the crossing fails, and placed exactly against existing mathematics. The structure is taken from the Atlas; the formal layer is answerable to it.

Scope

Version 0.2 reads finite, determinate placements at human scale. Probability, continuous dynamics, feedback, and temporal metric remain outside the initial read.

The Band

A band is a register in which relation resolves. Held strain settles, across the band, into a terminal resolution — the condition that completes the readable length of that band's asymmetry at the current scope. Each order in the Atlas closes at its own terminal:

First closes at Resolution (held strain determined at scope)
Second closes at Coupling (mutual carrying settled)
Third closes at Nesting (participation held within participation)
Higher closes at Recursion (nesting returned into its own carrying)

A band has width. It closes at its terminal resolution and carries internally to its edge. At First, resolution and edge fall together: Resolution itself carries the crossing. At the later bands the terminal closes and the band carries on to a separate edge — Second closes at Coupling and crosses at Participation. The distance between a band's closing and its edge is the band's own internal carrying.

The Crossing

A crossing is the passage between bands. Its single move: a resolution becomes a carrying. The condition closed at one band is the available continuation of the next.

First → Second resolution becomes carrying (Resolution ⇝ Carrying)
Second → Third participation organises a field (Participation ⇝ Field)
Third → Higher nesting returns into carrying (Nesting ⇝ Recursion)
Higher → Ground recognition re-enters practice (Recursion ⇝ Retrace Practice)

The crossing is the edge of the band — the place where what one band has closed is handed forward as what the next band carries. It is a vertical passage between orders, distinct from lateral meeting within a scope.

Carry and Trace

Carry and trace are one crossing read in two directions.

Carry is forward continuation across the crossing: a resolved condition is taken up and moved into further participation. Trace is the followable path back through the prior conditions that made the present condition available. Trace holds whether or not it is read; it follows what makes the distinction available, so it stays answerable to order rather than to the act of noticing it.

A placement is grounded where its forward carry and its backward trace close on each other at the crossing. This is the reciprocity the Atlas already keeps:

A carries B ⇒ B traces A

Read structurally: forward carry alone is projected sequence; backward trace alone is a name without conditions. Grounding is the two meeting at the edge. A carry that cannot be traced back has not yet crossed; it has only been claimed.

Reach

A participant takes up the order within a resolution band: the range it can receive, distinguish, retain, and carry. Reach is that range.

What exceeds a participant's reach is still real, effective, and traceable. It becomes readable to that participant when it is carried, slowed, amplified, measured, or translated into the band. Reach is why the same order can be fully present and still unreadable: the condition is available; the participant's band cannot yet carry it.

Tact at the Crossing

Tact is clean handling at a meeting: relation crosses without collapsing into interference, pressure, or harm.

A crossing is tactful where it delivers within the receiving band's reach — so what must remain recoverable stays traceable, and the crossing does not arrive as overload. Tact and reach are distinct: tact is the handling, reach is the range. They meet at the crossing, where handling is tactful precisely when it respects the reach it is crossing into. Tact is never absolute; a crossing tactful for one invariant, at one reach, can be destructive for another.

Return

Order is a return, and the return is not a repeat.

The highest band closes at Recursion and crosses into practice: recognition of the structure must re-enter carrying as discipline, where the Atlas is actually retraced — a note read, a trace walked, a pair tested. That crossing re-establishes contact with Ground. What forces it is Opacity: bearing accumulated past the point where retrace can enter without disciplined practice. The return is necessary precisely because something has built up.

So the structure does not arrive back at Ground as the same. It returns carrying the whole order it rose through. Recurrence already refuses identical repetition; Recursion is the stronger form — nesting folded back into its own carrying, everything still borne. Ground is re-contacted, not reset.

The return also has to be earned. A circle closes by geometry; this closes only where retrace is entered as action. Skip the work and the order does not quietly repeat — it does not close at all: carrying continues while the path back is lost. That open, un-returned condition is drift (Source Drift, Degenerate). The figure is a return that must be worked; the un-worked version is not a circle but a loose end.

The Bands

The figure is not a ring. Each crossing carries more forward; the return arrives at Ground holding everything the order rose through. The widening mark is what is being carried.

Ground what is acknowledged before terms derive

  └────┴────┴────────────────── earned retrace ──────────┘
↳ Ground, re-contacted — now carrying every band it rose through

Each band is a generic of the next: it generates the next band's conditions without becoming them. The return closes only where the retrace is worked. Where it is not, carrying continues while the path back is lost — the loop never closes, and the open end is drift.

Formal Section

The notation is sectional. It marks finite boundaries through which carrying can be compared; it does not propose bands, edges, or symbols as the substance of relation.

Let a band be written Bₙ, closing at its terminal resolution rₙ. The crossing is written:

kₙ : rₙ ⇝ Bₙ₊₁

Carrying kₙ continues the resolution closed at band n into the carrying available at band n+1.

For a condition b available at a later band, the trace is the followable path back:

tr(b) = the prior conditions required for b to hold, followable as a path

The grounding criterion states that carry and trace close at the crossing:

b is grounded iff for each crossing on tr(b), the forward carry kₙ
                      and the return trace meet — A carries B ⇒ B traces A

Reach is the band-range a participant p can carry:

ρ(p) = the bands p can receive, retain, and carry

A crossing kₙ read by p is tactful for what must remain recoverable where the recoverable condition stays within ρ(p) after the crossing — so its return trace remains followable at p's reach. Where the crossing carries more than ρ(p) can hold, the return trace is lost at p: this is overload, and the read is not tactful at that reach.

Refutable Reads

These are tests, not settled results.

Grounding by reciprocity. A placement that carries forward must be traceable back. To refute: exhibit a placement that is grounded yet carries forward with no available return trace at any reach. The Atlas predicts none exist; a clear one would break the criterion.

Composition across crossings. Crossings that are each tactful at a reach should compose while the recoverable condition stays within that reach. To refute: exhibit tactful crossings whose composition necessarily exceeds every reach that holds the parts, so the composed return trace cannot be followed.

Return closure. The highest band must cross into practice that re-contacts Ground. To refute: exhibit an RM-banded structure that ascends without a return crossing and remains grounded.

Worked Reads

A read follows a carrying chain across crossings, recoverable at the reading reach.

radio variation ⇝ antenna ⇝ electrical variation ⇝ sampled variation
⇝ visible variation ⇝ retinal contact ⇝ human read

The read need not preserve radio frequency as visible frequency. It is grounded where each crossing keeps its invariant — recurrence, relative intensity, timing — recoverable within the reader's reach. The visible read is a later carrying whose differences remain traceable back through the chain.

applied load ⇝ member ⇝ joint transfer ⇝ support reaction

The trace of a measured support reaction includes the members and joints jointly required for it. Removing a non-required element leaves the trace; removing a required carrying path breaks it.

prior story ⇝ rhythmic player ⇝ one-word contribution ⇝ changed openings ⇝ next contribution

The spoken word carries no fixed term. The story becomes locally readable through the crossing between rhythm, memory, grammar, and contribution. A later word helps retrace which reading the earlier contribution actually carried.

Where the Crossing Fails

The crossing is read most clearly at its boundary.

Threshold loss. Where a crossing renders every condition above a threshold as one downstream condition, two distinguishable priors arrive as one. The crossing may still carry presence above the threshold, but magnitude has exceeded what the read can recover: the return trace can no longer separate the two. The crossing carried more than the reading reach could hold.

Coincidence without carrying. Where two conditions change together but no carrying path crosses between them, there is no crossing — so neither carry nor trace runs between them. Their traces may converge on a shared prior while excluding one another. Agreement in time alone is not a crossing.

Relation to Existing Mathematics

The formal layer is, at first, a synthesis and interpretation of established structures, placed against them honestly.

What RM places that these do not already bundle is the banded close-and-cross with reciprocity as the grounding condition, and reach as what governs the crossing: a resolution becoming a carrying, grounded only where the return trace meets it at the edge, recoverable only within a participant's band. That is the claim to test and, where it fails, to give up.

Open Problems

  • Can the return trace be stated independently enough of the chosen read to compare two reads of the same crossing?
  • What is the right equivalence for "carry and trace meet at the crossing"?
  • When alternative traces are available, how is the minimal one chosen or weighted?
  • When do tactful crossings compose without the recoverable condition drifting past reach?
  • Can a band's internal carrying change while its external trace is preserved?
  • How is feedback added without confusing the return trace with categorical trace?

Places

Reality Mechanics Theory places the formal read of the Atlas as a banded resolution structure: each order closes at a terminal resolution, crosses into the next order's carrying, and stays grounded where forward carry and backward trace meet at the crossing.

Holds

Reality Mechanics Theory is held by Atlas, Order Trace, Resolution, Carrying, Coupling, Nesting, Recursion, Trace, and Tact. The banded spine and its forward and return reads must already be placed before a formal layer can read them.

Pairs

Reality Mechanics Theory pairs with Atlas. Atlas maps relation as dependency-ordered placement; Theory states selected structural claims formally so they can be instantiated, tested by where they fail, and placed against existing mathematics.

Traces

Nests

Reality Mechanics Theory nests beside the Atlas as a versioned formal read. It remains answerable to Atlas placement and to existing mathematics, replacing neither.

Reads

Reality Mechanics Theory becomes recognisable where a structural claim is stated as a band, a terminal resolution, a crossing, a carry-and-trace closure, or a reach — together with the conditions under which it would fail.

Carries

No grounded downstream theory is claimed at version 0.2.
